Building Memorials
May 31st, 2010He saved them from the hand of the foe; from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them. The waters covered their adversaries; not one of them survived. Then they believed his promises and sang his praise. But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his counsel. In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wasteland they put God to the test. So he gave them what they asked for, but sent a wasting disease upon them.
- Psalm 106:10-15
The troubles experienced by the nation of Israel were often the result of forgetting who God was and what He had done in their lives. Similarly, our troubles many times result from this same issue.
Human nature forgets the good things that have happened in our lives and only focuses on the bad experiences. The remedy to this condition is to build memorials in our lives that will help us be people of remembrance.
We can use memorials in our lives as tangible reminders to:
-
honor
-
celebrate
-
not repeat mistakes
The cross is the ultimate memorial that we should all continually point to in our lives and is the foundation for the building of other memorials at significant times in our lives.
