Church Distinctive #5) Fulfilling our part in the Church of Pittsburgh

  • “…the church at Jerusalem…”, “…the church at Antioch…”, “…the church of God in Corinth…”, “…the saints in Ephesus…”  (various Scriptures)

While we believe in the individual autonomy of local churches, we recognize that the Body of Christ is larger than any individual congregation.  There are some absolutes that we must agree on (i.e., essential Christian doctrines, such as the deity of Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, salvation through faith in Him alone, etc.), but we realize each local church has a different – and necessary – flavor.

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.      1 Corinthians 12:12

In order to see the blessings of unity come about and see our city transformed, churches must figure out how to come together.  Just as individuals were never meant to walk the Christian life alone, we believe that churches should walk together, utilizing the strengths and various giftings that he has placed in each one of them.  We must focus on the things that unite us, rather than those things that we don’t agree on.  The church is not a business; we are not in competition with other congregations, trying to capture the greatest market share or “one up” the church down the street.

At New Life Fellowship, our greatest concern is advancing the Kingdom of God.  If we do that, He will continue to build and grow our church.  We periodically support and attend activities of other churches in the city and actively participate in the Pittsburgh Neighborhood Church Network.  We desire to see Jesus glorified in His church in Pittsburgh, wherever His people gather together.  We believe that the church can come together in such a way that we will one day be able to present the entire city of Pittsburgh to Jesus, completely and utterly transformed by the coming of His kingdom here on earth as it is in Heaven.
